Killing of Joanna Demafelis possibly put on death row
The death of OFW Joanna Demafelis shocked the entire Philippines when it made the headlines. Demafelis, an Ilonggo who left the Philippines for Kuwait in the hopes of providing a better future for her family, met her tragic end at the hands of her employer. Her body was stored in a freezer for nearly two years before it was discovered.
After over a month of scouring, Nader Essam Assaf, the 40-year-old suspect involved in the killing of Joanna Demafelis, was finally charged after he surrendered himself to authorities on Tuesday, March 27.
According to The National, it is possible that Assaf will be put on death row if convicted. He is expected to face trial soon.
Prior to his surrender, the suspect went into hiding in Lebanon, while his wife, Mona, laid low in Syria. It wasn’t clear whether the latter was also caught or is still at large as reports from Definitely Filipino and Sun Star had conflicting details.
On February 12, Joanna Demafelis’ body was brought home in a wooden crate.
Her loved ones were understandably distraught.
Shortly after news of Joanna Demafelis’ gruesome death made headlines, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered a deployment ban on OFWs headed to Kuwait. According to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, the ban isn’t going away any time soon.
What can you say about the Lebanese suspect in Joanna Demafelis’ murder finally being charged? Do you think that the court ought to put him on death row? Share your thoughts and reactions in the comments section below.
