Victim Bullying: Sister mourns her younger sibling who took her own life after being bullied
Bullying is a never-ending issue worldwide, but judging by the alarming number of cases reported during the past few years, it appears to be growing worse than ever. All too often, these cases happen in school, involving young victims who are scared, vulnerable, and are yet to discover who they really are. What’s even more unfortunate is that a number end up taking their own lives, believing that it’s their only escape from the insufferable insults, taunting, and humiliation from bullies. It’s a pill that is hard swallow for everyone, but most especially for someone like Carla (name changed for confidentiality), whose 16-year-old sister ended her life after being bullied.
Last January 28, Carla took to Facebook to write about her late sibling’s story. Now that she’s gone, there’s nothing but memories left for the grief-stricken sister to reminisce.
“The last interaction I had with you was when I asked you if I look okay with my romp shorts and I did notice your pretty haircut. We sang “hayaan mo sila” and even laughed because we both didn’t know the lyrics.
“Now, I just think of all the things we’ve been together. What memories we had. The best was when I was doing your makeups on your graduation days. I expected to “Barbierized” you again after two months for your supposed highschool graduation but you ended it so soon.”
Carla refused to give context, however, but wrote words suggesting that her sister were bullied for her appearance and gender confusion. With that said, the elder sibling took the moment to remind social media users that bullying is real, and that it can happen to anyone.
“This is an awareness post to everyone that bullying at school, regardless if public or private, catholic or not, do exist. Also, an empowerment post about homosexuality…. I hope everyone learned from what happened to my sister. Words can kill a person. To all the students who bullied my sister because of her appearance and gender confusion, may you all find peace of mind. You destroyed someone’s future. You destroyed a family.”
We hope that this painful story would serve as a lesson for everyone not to get involved in bullying. Break the cycle. Speak up. Stand up.
