Filipinos are a hardworking and diligent people; willing to clock in a lot of overtime just to earn for their families. It is not an unusual thing to come across Filipinos working in different countries all around the world. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW)  who worked abroad from April to September 2016 was estimated to be 2.2 million and the number is still growing. But it’s not all good news for the Pinoys working overseas. According to recent reports, an OFW’s remains were discovered in a septic tank in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.

According to a report by RMN via Definitely Filipino, an OFW went missing in South Korea for over two years. Mikaelangelo Claveria simply vanished off the face of the Earth and his family from Cabatuan, Iloilo haven’t heard from him since he disappeared.

The Hwasung Police believed that the remains, a person in in his 30’s, might possibly be Mr. Claveria. Reportedly, the septic tank where the body was discovered in was in the area where the OFW worked in.

Netizens expressed their sympathies in the comment section:

The authorities are currently investigating and are looking to coordinate with the man’s family to confirm the identity of the Filipino worker. In addition, the Hwasung Police believes that there may have been three suspects involved in the case.

As of today, the Philippine Embassy and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) are helping with the investigation.
